Daryl Wood's Testimonial

Worked for Lodge and Air Service during summer 2006 (3 months)

The experience and training that I received at Bakers Narrows Air Service was exactly what I was looking for. It was the right combination of flight training plus work experience that is necessary to land that critical first bush pilot job. I don’t know about any other place that allows you to gain valuable work experience while paying for your flight training. Both the Lodge and the Air Service was very generous and welcoming. I made lots of new friends and had and unforgettable summer there. I highly recommend Bakers Narrows Air Service to anybody who wants to begin a career as a bush pilot. It will give you all to skills you need plus
the experience that will help you land that first job.

''My experience here at Bakers Narrows Lodge and Air Service has been an excellent learning experience. I have been able to get an inside look at how a lodge and an air service are run separately and together. I was also able to experience the stresses and rewards that a pilot experiences while flying into remote locations in all types of weather. I was also able to experience such things as: flying floatplanes into and out of small lakes and rivers, as well as large lakes, water operations with all the different combinations of wind speed and direction (upwind/downwind), water current speed and direction (against/with current), and precipitation type and heaviness, building docks and tent camps on remote lakes, transporting aluminum boats from lake to lake as well as general duties around the lodge such as: outdoor maintenance, restaurant service, store clerk,

I would definitely recommend this experience to any pilot wishing to get into commercial or private floatplane flying. ''

''Just like your first solo, flying floats for the first time is something you’ll never forget. My first experience came from flying with Bakers Narrows Air Service, something that I’ll remember forever. That little 172 pulling up to the dock and the instructor hopping out making it look so easy. We then got in together to make my first flight out to the island, it changed all my views and excitement about flying, I was now attached to floats. Each day was an even better experience with new terrain, new lakes and new techniques to try at all some more challenging then the others. After my week of training was complete I didn’t want to go back home. The experience I acquired in BC was amazing, the experience was great and the instruction was even better.
Once arriving at home base things changed a little, the flying was not just training anymore but real time bush flying, learning the in’s and out’s of an air service. The flying at Bakers Narrows Air Service was not just teaching me how to fly a float plane anymore but was teaching me what I needed to know when operating with cargo or passengers aboard. I feel that from that first day till now my flying has changed and improved and has made me a lot better in my judgment and skills as a pilot. I’d just like to thank my employers, instructors and coworkers again for making it such a great experience, I have had a great summer and will never forget what I have learnt and done. ''

''Bakers Narrows Air service I think offers some of the best bush training you can get. With the very experienced instructors you can get a wide variety of experience in all sorts of flying conditions. I have found that my flying skills have improved steadily since starting my training here. The training they give you not only taught me to fly floats but also to work and fly for a real air service at the same time. I think this is valuable experience to have, getting to fly in the real world while still in a training type environment.
This course is not just to get a float rating; it is to learn to fly in the bush for a air service. This is why the working for flying deal is such a great opportunity; it allowed me to gain a lot of float time without costing much money. Plus the work I did at Bakers Narrows was a whole new experience, I learned how to do so many new things, everything from working a cash register to building outpost camps to loading and maintaining aircraft.
The staff at Bakers Narrows was very friendly and welcoming; they made me feel at home from when the minute I arrived. While I worked at Bakers Narrows I made some great friends and had a wonderful time. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to have a great time and learn what real bush flying is all about.''

Flipping through a "weekly flyer" magazine, who would have thought I'd find an experience of a lifetime. I flew from Toronto Pearson to Vancouver where I was picked up at the dock by one of the bush pilot and instructor Gerald a.k.a "G" for vancouver island waterbase. And from there on, it was the best flying I have ever done. We did everything, glassy, rough water, crosswind, over the treetop, drawing circles on one float, flying at 8000ft only to see mountains were still higher, experienced all the wind conditions, updrafts & downdrafts that are associated to mountain flying, tight valleys, high altitude lakes, landed in some intense lake and rivers, sometimes there was only enough room for the wings...so it seemed anyway.

Then I was off to Flin Flon, Manitoba. This is where I really got to see how an air service works. I did a lot of things like, weighing cargo to proper loadings of an aircraft, cash handlings, customer service, construction work, aircraft elementary maintenance... I was also lucky enough to help with the moose hunt, it was a lot of work, but fun too.

Got some right seat on the beaver and few hours on C-206, and for anybody who likes fishing, it's unbelievable up here.

All in all, this is by far the best Aviation related experience yet.
